Children all over the world, no matter their race, background, or beliefs, never cease to inspire me with their resilience and bravery.
At just 11 years old, Shi Ying was confronted with the likelihood of paralysis due to the location of her tumour. Her parents sought opinions from leading neurosurgical centres across China, and each of us had to caution them about the probable outcome of surgery, paralysis on her left side.
I felt deeply privileged that they entrusted me with her care. Following the operation, she was completely paralysed. Yet six months later, her recovery has been remarkable, her left side has regained near-normal function, and her scans show no remaining tumour.
