He had been told there was nothing more that could be done.
At 55, after being diagnosed with recurrent glioblastoma, he was sent home to die. But he decided to seek another opinion in China.
What followed changed the picture completely. Much of what was thought to be recurrent tumour appeared to be infection.
He underwent radical resection of the abnormal tissue, with only minimal worsening of his condition. He now has the possibility of a much longer survival than anyone had expected.
It is a powerful reminder that, sometimes, the story is not quite what it first appears to be, and that there can still be reason for hope.
