Jane S
Ms Jane S is a 51-year-old lady who first presented in 2010 with a huge tumour in a region called the insula. This region has traditionally been considered too sensitive for surgery because it controls extremely important functions, is covered by very eloquent brain and is wrapped in vital blood vessels. If a tumour involves the dominant, in most cases the left, insula, then it is even more risky. Jane saw multiple doctors in NSW who ALL considered her tumour inoperable. Since then she has had several more operations for recurrences, but continues to live a full and happy life 15 years later.
Pre Op
The tumour in the left insular region is one of the largest seen in this practice. The MRI shows that the vital middle cerebral artery and all it’s branches are incorporated into this tumour making surgery extremely treacherous. Even more dangerous is the involvement of the lenticulostriate arteries.

Post Op
The MRI shows a complete and radical resection. Jane suffered temporary speech impairment after surgery which returned to normal within months.
